An Inductive Leap To Far

Collins, Suzanne. Catching Fire, Book Two. New York: Scholastic Press, 2009. Print

In Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins, president snow makes citizens of Panem and all the districts believe that the 75th hunger games is when the previous victors from each district get re chosen to go back into the games. This makes the citizens take an inductive leap to far because there is no way that is what the card made 75 years ago says president snow just wants Katniss to die so that there will not be a rebellion. Katniss and Peeta do end up going back into the hunger games which make citizens of Panem unhappy because Katniss and Peeta Are the two most beloved people in all the world at this current time. The citizens of Panem are all clueless except for few from most districts and most from district 12 (district with Katniss and Peeta). This then ends up when Katniss breaks out of the arena with the help from other district tributes and Peeta gets captured by the capital.

Style

In the book The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins.

Collins, Suzanne. The Hunger Games. New York: Scholastic, 2008. Print

Understatement: The deliberate playing down of an event or qualities of a charcter.
Katniss Everdeen and Gale Hawthorne are in the woods catching food before the reaping so they can have a good meal once it is over. They go to a open area outside of district 12 to eat some bread Gale traded for a squirrel to celebrate the hunger games. Celebrating the hunger games is not what most people do most would be scared and hudled in there house hoping they or there family doesnt get chosen. "We have to joke about it because the alternative is to be scared out of your wits." (Collins 8). This is significant because Katnisses younger sister Primrose gets her name chosen and Katniss volunteers for her so what she should have took more seriously came back at her and her family.

Social Issues

I will be using the book SKUD to answer the main question "Why has this social issue been presented in your novel?". The social issue that will be used is inequality. Inequality is shown in the book SKUD when Brad gets taken off his hockey teams first line and gets put on the fourth line because a girl comes to the team who is faster and better puck handler than him but he was on the first line for three years in a row. The purpose of this  inequality in the book is to prove to Brad that hockey isn't the only thing in his life that matters.

Significance Of.....

The book i have just finished reading is Skud.
Foon, Dennis. Skud. Toronto: Groundwood, 2003. Print.

For the first Significant element I will write about is when Tommy and Brad plan on beating up Andy because Tommy thinks Shelia and him are cheating but a unknown character Shane comes in a helps out Andy before he gets too badly beaten up so Tommy and Brad are scared of Shane because he is part of a gang and becomes a main charcter in the story. Here is a quote from shane once he comes to the cage and sees Them beating up andy "I'm his backup,"saith he(Foon,42). This reveals character traits about the supporting character Shane who here becomes a main character by seeing that he isnt some tough guy who just kills but someone that cares.

The second Significant element I will write about is what introduces a crisis to the main character Brad when the hockey arena burns down from flammables left in the change room from a girl that joins the team and when he gets put down to the fourth line of his team and his dreams of getting drafted to the NHL. The first quote is "I'm putting you on the fourth line, Brad."(Foon,89). "Alas, now all is charred and cindered. Nothing is left. Hockey is dead."(Foon, 125) This quote was made by brad after the fire came to the rink.

Defining and Describing a Character

Alexie, Sherman, and Ellen Forney. The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-time Indian. New York: Little, Brown, 2007. Print

Arnold Spirit (Junior) is the character i will describe.
He has these words that describe him:

1.Perseverance: steady persistence in a course of action, a purpose, a state, etc., especially in spite of difficulties, obstacles, or discouragement.
Synonyms are Persistence and Determination.
Antonyms are Quitting and Laziness.
2. Creative: resulting from originality of thought, expression etc.; imaginative.
Synonyms are Expression and Imagination.
Antonyms are Dull and Distasteful
3. Knowledge: acquaintance with facts, truths, or principles, as from study or investigation; general erudition.
Synonyms are Comprehension and Understanding.
Antonyms are Stupidity and Ignorance.

I know that Arnold has these qualities because he persisted to follow his dream in the hope for a future even though people didn't like him leaving as showed in this quote "You'll be the first one to ever leave the rez this way," Mom said. "The Indians around her are going to be angry with you."
Arnold shows his imagination by drawing cartoons of him and sometimes of his family and friend rowdy as showed in this quote "I draw cartoons  of my mother and father; my sister and grandmother; my best friend, Rowdy; and everybody else on the rez.
When Arnold is in he class he is known as a very understanding boy with his knowledge as in this quote "I remember when people used to think i was smart".

Identify and Sort

The book i choose to right on is The absolutely true diary of a part time indian. The five main elements in my book were Conflict, Setting, Conclusion, Character and Suspense.
1.Conflict
2.Suspense
3.Character
4.Conclusion
5.Setting
To me for my book conflict is the most important element in this story. During the story Junior and Rowdy are friends for the wholoe first half of the book but then once Junior decides to change schools so he can become more succesful his reservation camp rebels against him beating him up and making fun of him for leaving the reserve. Rowdy himself gets angry at Junior and Junior trys to be nice and ask if he wants to go also but Rowdy takes it the wrong way and punches Junior so they break up as friends.
"You'll be the first one to ever leave the rez this way," Mom said. "The indians around here are going to be angry with you." (Sherman Alexie, Pg 47)
The significance to this quotation from the book is that he knows the indians will be upset with him but he still goes through with his dream.
