Understatement: The deliberate playing down of an event or qualities of a charcter.
Katniss Everdeen and Gale Hawthorne are in the woods catching food before the reaping so they can have a good meal once it is over. They go to a open area outside of district 12 to eat some bread Gale traded for a squirrel to celebrate the hunger games. Celebrating the hunger games is not what most people do most would be scared and hudled in there house hoping they or there family doesnt get chosen. "We have to joke about it because the alternative is to be scared out of your wits." (Collins 8). This is significant because Katnisses younger sister Primrose gets her name chosen and Katniss volunteers for her so what she should have took more seriously came back at her and her family.
